故事發(fā)生在17世紀早期，當時的美洲大陸還居住著大量不同種族的原著民，各個種族在同一個大環(huán)境下 有著自己不同的種族文化，但彼此相處也還算融洽。這樣的終于在一天被外來的侵入者打破。在1607年 三月的一個春天，三艘載著103個英國人的小船緩緩駛?cè)肓瞬柯涞念I(lǐng)域。他們的目的是在“新大陸”上建 立起自己國家文化，宗教和經(jīng)濟的立足點。船上銬著一個在靠岸后就要被絞死的，叫做約翰·史密斯的27歲的年輕人。史密斯是個歐洲戰(zhàn)爭中幸存的老兵，具有足夠的智慧和經(jīng)驗保住自己的頭，在拋錨之后便成功地說服船長釋放了自己，理由是要為建立殖民地盡量保存有生力量。在他們的探險旅程中，這只殖民隊伍不知不覺已經(jīng)進入了酋長Powhatan的勢力范圍。



　　對于酋長和他的部落來說，這是一個他們世代生活的封閉世界，于是這幫英國來的不速之客相當不受歡迎，并且在雙方的溝通中遇到了很多障礙。史密斯希望能夠從當?shù)厝酥姓业揭粋�助手，幫助他解決交流的困難。這個時候他碰到了一個宛若林中精靈般不食人間煙火的年青女子，她的家人和朋友都叫她“Pocahontas”，是酋長Powhatan最疼愛的女兒。此時史密斯與Pocahontas之間，已經(jīng)漸漸產(chǎn)生了一種多于友誼，甚至超越浪漫的奇妙的感情……
