上世紀(jì)30年代的美國(guó)，離馬丁·路德金開始為黑人爭(zhēng)取權(quán)益的時(shí)間還早20多年。黑人居民在美國(guó)依然時(shí)時(shí)感受到歧視，種族隔離政策依然盛行。然而，1935年，在德克薩斯州一個(gè)僅有350名學(xué)生韋萊學(xué)院中，教師邁爾文·托爾森（丹澤爾·華盛頓）決定成立一個(gè)學(xué)生辯論隊(duì)，并且努力讓他們達(dá)到能與國(guó)家一流大學(xué)學(xué)生競(jìng)爭(zhēng)的水平。當(dāng)然，韋萊學(xué)院的學(xué)生全是黑人，在種族主義盛行的年代，托爾森的這個(gè)目標(biāo)不太容易到達(dá)。 托爾森本身是個(gè)詩人，對(duì)生活有著激情，他堅(jiān)信只要努力目標(biāo)就能實(shí)現(xiàn)。于是他在學(xué)校開了個(gè)興趣班，專門教有興趣的學(xué)生辯論的知識(shí)，而托爾森第一次開課所講的話就是“我是個(gè)黑人，同時(shí)也是個(gè)美國(guó)人”，他不僅教會(huì)學(xué)生辯論知識(shí)，同時(shí)讓他們明白人生而平等的道理。興趣班中的四個(gè)學(xué)生：亨利·勞爾（納特·帕克）、漢密爾頓·伯格斯（杰梅尼·威廉姆斯）、薩曼莎·布克（茱妮·斯莫蕾特）還有年僅14歲的小詹姆斯·法莫（丹澤爾·惠特克）最后成為托爾森辯論隊(duì)成員。 托爾森的想法在當(dāng)時(shí)被大多數(shù)人認(rèn)為太過激進(jìn)，對(duì)托爾森有這種印象的人當(dāng)中，不僅有自視甚高的美國(guó)白人，就算黑人本身也有會(huì)認(rèn)為托爾森這樣的做法是在鬧事，韋萊學(xué)院的院長(zhǎng)詹姆斯·法莫博士（弗里斯特·惠特克）就是當(dāng)中的一個(gè)。 法莫院長(zhǎng)不希望自己的兒子小詹姆斯·法莫加入托爾森的辯論隊(duì)，然而兒子堅(jiān)持要跟著托爾森學(xué)習(xí)。托爾森帶著4人辯論隊(duì)到黑人社區(qū)發(fā)表演講，一次次的成功使得這支隊(duì)伍在黑人社區(qū)中的名氣越來越大，而主流的白人社會(huì)也開始以各種方式關(guān)注這支黑人隊(duì)伍，有的認(rèn)為托爾森的隊(duì)伍不知好歹，并開始用威脅甚至暴力對(duì)待這支黑人隊(duì)伍，而有的則以友好的姿態(tài)歡迎這支黑馬隊(duì)伍的出現(xiàn)。哈佛大學(xué)給托爾森發(fā)了邀請(qǐng)函，希望托爾森的隊(duì)伍能進(jìn)到這所美國(guó)第一學(xué)府當(dāng)中，與他們的學(xué)生辯論隊(duì)來一次比賽。當(dāng)然，哈佛的學(xué)生辯論隊(duì)成員都是白人。于是，托爾森和他的隊(duì)伍成為史上第一支能與白人正面對(duì)抗的辯論隊(duì)。
